Ganesh, located at 38 Trill Rd in Observatory, Cape Town, presents a culinary adventure that elicits mixed reviews. The restaurant captivates with its warm atmosphere and friendly service, leaving guests embraced by a bustling, vibrant energy. As noted by Jaco van Staden, the quirky ambiance and reasonable prices make it a commendable choice for Vietnamese-inspired dishes.
However, the food has elicited a spectrum of opinions. Liesl Coetzer highlights an inconsistency in flavor, particularly in traditional Thai offerings, while others, like lilian thumecke, rave about the exceptional culinary experience. Outstanding dishes mentioned by patrons include the chickpea and corn fritters and pork belly skewers, encapsulating the flavor potential listeners seek.
Meanwhile, Cara Jacobson's joy over a kingklip special hints at the restaurant's capacity for delightful surprises, appealing to those who wish to share flavorful dishes within a group. Despite some guests feeling that certain items lack authenticity and flair, the vibrant atmosphere and positive service create an engaging overall experience. Proceed with an open mind, as you navigate through Ganesh's eclectic menu, celebrating its highs while acknowledging its lows.

Reviews for Ganesh
Review highlights
Based on 336 reviewsGanesh is widely appreciated for its vibrant atmosphere and attentive service, creating a warm and lively dining experience. The restaurant’s cocktails and drink offerings are frequently highlighted as standout elements. While many patrons praise the food, describing it as flavorful and well-executed, opinions vary slightly regarding authenticity and seasoning, particularly in traditional dishes. The menu’s diverse and quirky Asian-inspired options, including Vietnamese and Thai influences, often receive positive remarks, especially for shareable plates and specials. Overall, Ganesh is seen as a great spot for casual dining, with an inviting ambiance and consistently good service, making it a popular choice in the Observatory area.
Overall a nice experience, but we weren't blown away. The cocktails were the best part of the night. The food was average and did not pack that flavour punch you'd expect from Thai food. Very salty Phat Kaphrao which they make with beef instead of the traditional chicken or pork - no fish sauce, chili, or Thai basil (not that we could pick up ) - just salty. The pork ribs were okay, but I wouldn't order it again. Same with the mango sticky rice which is hard to pull off because Asian mangos beats our mangos by far Also worth mentioning: they've changed the menu since opening. They're no longer serving Khao Soi and all dishes are now small plates at about R120 per dish. Considering the area and overall experience, we found it to be overpriced for what you get. Can't fault the service. Warm, friendly, fast.
Amazing quirky place with Vietnamese type food. Food is great and not too pricey. Staff great atmosphere great. Ive taken various people here and its always a hit!
The food was amazing. The service was great. The drinks are also really good 10 out of 10 experience. Everything tasted good. The dessert was also really yummy.
Great welcome, Wonderful service and staff, Despite it being busy. Atmosphere warm, Chaotic, And wonderful. We sat in the kitchen area, Which is hot and happening. Outstanding dishes for us were: Chickpea and corn fritters Pork belly skewers Beef rib with rice and fried egg But, frankly, everything was good. Love it here, And bodega ramen In town. Great evening!
Such good food, such good ambience! Really would recommend. Definitely go with a slightly bigger group so you can share menu items. The kingklip was excellent - really hope they add it to the menu (it was a special)
Calvin was an incredible waitron and the atmosphere was great. The food overall was yummy and would come back again, but the value for money wasn’t 5/5. You need at least 3 dishes between two people so it can be quite pricey. The Gai Tod (fried chicken) needed a sauce, and unfortunately the jungle curry was so spicy that my friends couldn’t finish it (their spice tolerance is usually high). Cocktails were great and definitely recommend the Moo Ping (pork skewers) and Som Tam (papaya salad), as well as the Phad Kra Pao (beef short rib with rice and fried egg).
